Stamford, CT –  Woodard & Curran was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC CT) with a 2010 Engineering Excellence Award for a major park and athletic field revitalization project in the City of Stamford, CT. The project included significant work to improve three city-owned sites: West Beach Park, Lione Park, and Westhill High School’s athletic fields.

Woodard & Curran, as part of a design-build team with DeRosa Tennis Contractors, Inc., completed the permitting, design, and construction associated with the replacement of existing natural grass athletic fields with synthetic turf at the three City properties. Because environmental conditions at the sites were generally complex, and included contaminated soils and historical flooding issues, Woodard & Curran made careful provisions for the management of contaminated soil, using capping, reuse, and removal strategies to address environmental and health risks due to the contamination. Woodard & Curran also employed advanced stormwater management strategies, including subsurface detention and piping systems, to address historical flooding conditions, control stormwater flow and minimize game play downtime.

The Westhill High School site included a new multi-use atheletic field accommodating football, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. The West Beach Park site consisted of two full-size soccer fields that can also be configured as four smaller soccer fields. The Lione Park site includes a multi-use field, which provides space for baseball, soccer, and one of the first synthetic turf cricket fields in the Northeast.

Stamford Mayor, Dannel P. Malloy said of the project, “We are extremely proud of this project and are pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with Woodard & Curran and the rest of the Design/Build Team to deliver first-class facilities for our residents.”
