Delivering Expertise to Meet a Range of Needs
Waterbury, CT
Since 2001, the City of Waterbury, Connecticut has looked to Woodard & Curran to deliver a host of services to meet their engineering and environmental management needs. From landfill management services, to addressing sanitary sewer issues, to cleanup of a contaminated former brass mill, Woodard & Curran strives to deliver results that exceed Waterbury’s expectations on every project.
Collection System Rehabilitation Eliminates Sewer Overflows
Waterbury was experiencing sewer system overflows that compromised water quality and forced the City to enter into a consent decree with the U.S. EPA. The decree required investigation, assessment, and rehabilitation of the City’s sewer system and a commitment to sewer cleaning programs and staff training. Woodard & Curran conducted the assessment and investigations and developed a prioritized rehabilitation program that included spot repair, pipe replacements, and accessibility improvements. The program successfully eliminated illicit discharges from the sewer system and will likely enable the City to close out the consent decree earlier than expected.
Landfill Management: On Schedule, Under Budget
When Waterbury selected Woodard & Curran to provide long-term landfill-related services, it laid out an aggressive schedule of needs. Woodard & Curran is managing 24 separate tasks, including compliance audits; design and implementation of a groundwater, surface water, and landfill gas monitoring program; leachate control system upgrade design; staff training; and addressing many other engineering and compliance requirements.
Restoring a Valuable Resource: The Chase Brass Mill
Woodard & Curran is currently handling the environmental aspects of the remediation and redevelopment of the former Chase Brass manufacturing complex for Waterbury. The site has been vacant for years, and the City plans to use it as a consolidated Department of Public Works facility. Woodard & Curran is conducting extensive and complex investigations at the site, and performing all the remediation design, planning, and construction.
