Contact Jeff Hamel
Mr. Hamel has 20 years of experience working on corrective action sites. He has primarily been responsible for the planning, scheduling, coordination, implementation, and closure of site investigation and remediation projects involving the releases of hazardous materials and/or petroleum products. Mr. Hamel has considerable experience planning and implementing large, multi-phased projects and managing large amounts of analytical, hydrogeological, and investigation data. He has participated in preliminary assessments, comprehensive site characterizations, risk assessments, feasibility studies, remedy design and implementation, operation and maintenance of remedial systems, and construction projects for regulatory agencies and private industry. He has managed site investigation and remediation projects consistent with the Connecticut Remediation Standard Regulations, RCRA Corrective Action, Superfund, the TSCA PCB Disposal Regulations, and the Massachusetts Contingency Plan. In addition, he has also conducted and participated in a number of public and regulatory meetings where project results and findings were presented to the general public and regulatory agencies.
Why I Do What I Do
"The primary focus of my 20-year career has been the investigation and remediation of subsurface hazardous materials contamination. What I find exciting about this work is the challenge of not being able to directly see what is happening in the subsurface and having to extrapolate and develop a conceptual site model based on relatively little data. There is a sense of accomplishment when you track down the plume or select a specific remedial alternative that is successful. I also enjoy working in different geographies and under a range of regulatory programs, which always provides new challenges."

Project Highlights
Electric Boat Corporation
Multiple Locations
I started working with Electric Boat on corrective action projects in 1991. These projects include multi-phased site investigations; implementation and operation of remedial systems; PCB transformer assessment and remediation programs; human health and ecological risk assessments; groundwater and contaminant modeling; and data management. One of the most interesting components of the project was designing and operating a floating petroleum product recovery system that uses the tidal fluctuation to act as the drawdown component to increase product recovery.
Sutton Brook Disposal Area Superfund Site
Tewksbury, MA
I led the completion of the Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for this 100-acre former disposal site that included 40 acres of landfill and other release areas. The work, which included several field sampling mobilizations and a full baseline human health and ecological risk assessment, was completed on a tight schedule and resulted in an EPA Record of Decision in three years from the start of the RI/FS. The selected remedy consisted of landfill capping, soil and sediment excavation, brook restoration, barrier walls, and a phased approach to groundwater remediation initiating with monitored natural attenuation.
PCB Remediation
Large Private University, MA
A 3-story historical electrical switch house was being renovated for residential condominium use. During the pre-project due diligence activities, building materials were found to contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) which overtime had leached. Woodard & Curran was hired to plan and oversee the investigation and remediation. We had to work quickly to develop work plans and get EPA approval to keep the project on schedule. This was accomplished and, combined with our close collaboration with the remedial contractor, resulted in the project opening on schedule.
